The New Black/Yellow MeisterSinger Astroscope Limited Edition

The most unusual day-date watch returns in bright, bold colours.

When you think about a day-date watch, you probably picture this kind of display or maybe something a bit more complex but still highly traditional. But as we’ve discovered, MeisterSinger doesn’t like doing things that other brands do. First, all of the watches produced by the German brand use a mono-aiguille or single-hand display to indicate the time, with or without additional complications. And for its day-date watch, MeisterSinger decided to go for a display that pays tribute to astronomy, which in the latest limited edition of this MeisterSinger Astroscope is enlivened with a vivid black and yellow colour scheme.

This new limited edition Astroscope uses the same technical base as all previous editions, such as the standard production model here or this version celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the brand. This means a 40mm stainless steel watch with a domed sapphire crystal, a decent water-resistance of 50m and an outsourced, slightly modified Sellita SW220-1 movement – 4Hz frequency, 38h power reserve, automatic winding. Nothing extraordinary, but this isn’t why the Astroscope matters.

The real deal of this watch is the use of astronomical features to elevate one of the simplest complications, the day-date, to another level. No sub-dials or classic arched windows with the day of the week printed in full here. Instead, MeisterSinger adds a more philosophical touch to its display, just like the single hand brings a different approach to the perception of time. No frenetic seconds hand, but instead a more relaxed approach to time, an ode to enjoying the present moment (no worries, MeisterSinger watches still indicate the time precisely).

In this watch, the day-date indication relies on the traditional 7-day division but not in any particular astronomical rhythm. Tuesday doesn’t follow Monday on the dial… Weird? Yes, but also quite cool. The current day of the week is indicated by a yellow dot wandering back and forth above the horizon, which gives the impression of a night sky. The Astroscope displays the weekdays with seven heavenly bodies; the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn, as shown above. It is mechanically simple but visually elevates the whole concept.

This year, a new MeisterSinger Astroscope special series limited to 200 pieces with a black sunburst finish and sunny yellow is released. Thanks to a Super-LumiNova coating, the hands, hour indices and weekday display glow in the dark. The new model comes with a supple leather strap in matching yellow, and the back is printed with the mention “One of 200” on the crystal.

The Black/Yellow MeisterSinger Astroscope Limited Edition is now available and priced at EUR 2,190. For more details, please visit www.meistersinger.com.
