In a catalogue composed mainly of ultra-large, boldly shaped and solar-powered dive watches, the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m, also known as the Fujitsubo, came as a refreshing surprise. Classically shaped, almost vintage in its looks and spirit, but yet packing an impressive list of features despite a reasonable price, it has become a hit for the brand. After two editions with Super-Titanium cases coated with transparent Duratect, either with black or blue dial, it is time for the Fujitsubo to reveal its dark side, with the new NB6025-59H, equipped with a titanium case and bracelet and finished in dark grey Duratect DLC.

As explained in this video review, there’s a very cool story behind the creation of the modern Promaster Diver Fujitsubo; that of a Citizen Challenge Diver from 1977 recovered from an Australian beach. Despite having spent years underwater, in the dirt and being almost entirely covered in barnacles, the watch was miraculously still in running condition. This watch served as a source of inspiration for a modern re-creation, a watch that is officially known as the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m, but that has been nicknamed Fujitsubo (in reference to the small seashells attached to its case…)

On paper, it had everything to become a hit… In reality, it proved even better. Lightweight, extremely comfortable, good-looking, fully equipped and, altogether, a genuine performance bargain. And, as said, contrary to many of Citizen’s dive watches, with oversized cases, complex shapes and polarizing designs, the Promaster Diver Fujitsubo was conventional (in a good way). A classic dive watch with a 41mm diameter, straightforward 1970s-inspired design, rotating bezel and unprotected crown, it however benefited from all the technologies of Citizen… Super-Titanium case, Duratect coating for a strong protection of the surfaces, bevelled sapphire crystal, 200m water-resistance and in-house automatic movement.

First presented with a black dial and a matching polyurethane strap (ref. NB6021-17E), or with a blue dial and a Super-Titanium bracelet (ref. NB6021-68L), the third member of the Fujitsubo family has recently been unveiled. And it’s clearly looking at the dark side of things.

Knowing Citizen’s expertise in the field of materials (titanium in particular) and surface treatments, it doesn’t come as a surprise that this new edition of the Promaster Diver Fujitsubo comes in Super-Titanium. This means titanium coated with Duratect, a combination allowing lightness and resistance. For this dark edition, the case, bezel, crown and bracelet are coated in black, or actually a very dark tone of grey. And despite the accessible price, we’re talking about super-resistant DLC Duratect coating. And in all fairness, this gunmetal tone is rather appealing.

Another novelty for this reference NB6025-59H is the dial. Contrary to the pitch black dial of the classic version we reviewed here, it comes in a gradient grey tone, with blackened hands and black printed logos. The rest of the dial is otherwise identical, with large and luminous embossed markers. Inside the case, under a solid titanium back, is the in-house automatic calibre 9051, with 42h power reserve, decent accuracy and resistance to magnetic fields.

The Citizen Promaster Diver Automatic Fujitsubo 200m Super-Titanium Duratect DLC Black NB6025-59H is worn on a matching bracelet with folding clasp and diver’s extension. It is now available and priced at EUR 995 or USD 1,195. For more details, please visit Citizen’s global website. And for more details about the Fujitsubo collection, please consult our review here.

  1. Shame for no sub 40mm version + ecodrive eventually
