With the launch of the new Ulysse Nardin Diver Net Azure and Diver X Skeleton Azure, the brand continues its commitment to environmental protection by responsibly utilising raw and recycled materials. While these new watches share many similarities with previous models, they stand out with their distinct light blue colour schemes. Ulysse Nardin’s dedication to raising awareness about environmental issues is commendable and connects it to shark attack survivor and activist Mike Coots to support the OCEARCH shark tracking program.

OCEARCH is a global non-profit organisation that researches sharks in order to gather otherwise unattainable data for scientific purposes. This data is used to conduct further research, provide education and raise awareness of the challenges our oceans are facing. The OCEARCH organization has conducted 45 expeditions around the globe so far and has published 75 papers on various issues concerning our oceans. Through advanced tracking software, they keep track of all sorts of sharks, which you can check out through their online tracker. Mike Coots, a surfer and photographer who survived a Tiger Shark attack when he was in his teens, and now turned activist, has joined the OCEARCH team.

The launch of the Diver Net Azure serves as a reminder that approximately nine million tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year. Ulysse Nardin aims to combat this issue by incorporating recycled materials into the watch’s construction. The Diver Net Azure features a 44mm case with the central part, bezel, caseback, and movement mount crafted from 95% recycled steel. The side case and caseback ring utilise Nylo material comprising 60% recycled fishing nets. At the same time, the unidirectional rotating bezel is made entirely of Carbonium, a material derived from upcycled carbon fibres.

Although these sustainability efforts may seem small due to the watch’s dimensions and weight, imagine the impact if every business adopted such a responsible approach. The Diver Net Azure boasts a captivating san-blasted dial with an embossed X, luminescent hour and minute hands, rectangular indices, and azure accents. It houses a self-winding UN-118 movement with impressive features such as a silicon and DiamonSil escapement and a comfortable 60 hours of running time. The 300m water-resistant watch is worn on an azure-coloured rubber strap, creating a fitting seaside companion. The price for the Diver Net Azure is CHF 11.900 / EUR 12,700 / USD 12.600.

In contrast, the Diver X Skeleton Azure exudes a unique appeal with its unconventional diver aesthetics. It showcases an X-shaped skeleton dial in polished and satin-finished black PVD and a polished and satin-finished black DLC titanium case. The open dial architecture reveals the self-winding UN-372 in-house manufacture skeleton movement, lending a technical aura to this 200m water-resistant timepiece. This movement also comes with silicon components and an impressive 96 hours of power reserve.

The vibrant azure-coloured elements create a relaxed atmosphere, while the Diver X Skeleton Azure’s design exudes a youthful and bold attitude. It is secured on an azure-coloured rubber strap with a black “Ulysse Nardin” ceramic element at 6 o’clock, closed with a folding clasp in black ceramic and black PVD titanium. The Diver X Skeleton Azure is priced at CHF 25,000 / EUR 26,800 USD 26.400.

With both these watches, Ulysse Nardin continues to push for reducing its carbon footprint, incorporating recycled materials as much as it can, and raising awareness for environmental issues concerning our oceans. Next to encouraging and embracing upcycled waste materials, UN also supports scientific research programs concerning the preservation of sharks, an important symbol to the brand.
