2023 Black Ceramic Zenith Defy Skyline - Defy Skyline Skeleton

The Defy Skyline collection was introduced by Zenith in 2022 and offered a new interpretation of the original Defy series, aimed to improve the brand’s standing in luxury sports watches. There were 14 references in the Skyline collection so far, including a range of 36mm watches. The 41mm models, powered by El Primero 3620 high-frequency automatic manufacture movement with the 1/10th of a second indicator, including the skeleton versions, all featured octagonal steel cases with a faceted steel bezel. Today, the brand expands the offer by adding two 41mm references made in black ceramic.

The new Zenith Defy Skyline Black Ceramic models, as the name implies, are presented in a black ceramic case with a mix of satin-brushed and polished surfaces. It comes with an integrated bracelet crafted from the same material. Ceramic is a tough substance, highly resistant to scratches and signs of wear, so it is a perfect choice for a watch that is supposedly worn in challenging situations. Which does not mean it has to lack certain elegance and finesse. The black galvanic dial is finished with a sunray pattern, and four-pointed stars cover the entire surface in an orderly geometric fashion.

The hands and the indices bear a familiar shape; they are faceted and rhodium-plated, coated with SuperLuminova to shine in the dark. With the contrasting background, the time indication is also apparent in the daytime. The new Defy Skyline Ceramic, as to be expected, is powered by the El Primero 3620 automatic movement, beating at the rate of 36,000vph, with a 1/10th of a second indicator (at 9 o’clock) driven directly by the escapement, featuring silicon escape-wheel and lever. The movement provides approximately 60 hours of power reserve, and a bi-directional winding mechanism with a star-shaped and satin-finished oscillating weight winds it.

The Defy Skyline Skeleton Black Ceramic is distinguished from the “regular” version by the open dial with a blackened central four-pointed star structure, exposing the skeleton movement with black bridges and a main plate. The 1/10th of a second indicator was moved to the 6 o’clock position; the visual depth makes the watch look very technical, much more so than the non-skeletonised reference. With the rest, the two new models are similar. The hands and the indices are faceted and rhodium-plated, coated with SuperLuminova; the movement is also the high-frequency 3620 (with the SK denomination for Skeleton), and the water resistance is the same 100m.

These new black ceramic watches are equipped with an interchangeable strap system, which is helpful since both offer an additional black rubber strap with a “starry sky” pattern and a black PVD stainless buckle with a folding clasp. Available worldwide from the Zenith boutiques and authorised retailers, the Defy Skyline Black Ceramic and Defy Skyline Skeleton Black Ceramic are priced at CHF 14,900 and CHF 16,900, respectively.
